In the 2022 ATP Cincinnati Open's second round on Wednesday, world number 11 Cameron Norrie will compete against fellow Brit Andy Murray, who is ranked 47th.
Although it wasn’t the easiest of victories, Cameron Norrie would be happy to have eliminated Holger Rune in the first round and secured this confrontation with Andy Murray. Norrie defeated Rune 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-4 in a match that lasted two hours and 35 minutes despite Rune dropping his serve four times. In reality, there wasn’t much to pick between the two players, and Norrie even broke his rival four times. It was the first set tie-breaker that made all the difference. In the first set, Rune had a break advantage, but he was broken shortly after, and he lost the set point in the tiebreaker off his own service. In the second game, he immediately came back with a break, but Norrie was able to put pressure on the Rune serve when he served at 4-5 to force a third set and stay in the match. Norrie will now try to keep up his strong season-long play, knowing that Murray may have defeated him in the past, but that on his present form, he has what it takes to defeat the former world number one.
Murray and Stan Wawrinka have faced off against one other almost a dozen times previously, with the British player holding a tiny head-to-head lead. By defeating Wawrinka in three gruelling sets to advance to the second round, he increased that margin. Murray required almost three hours to defeat Wawrinka after a three-match losing streak that includes opening defeats in both Washington and Montreal. He won 7-6 (3), 5-7, 7-5 to go to the next round. Murray’s stronger performance in the opening set tie-breaker proved to be the deciding factor in a match in which both players earned themselves three breaks of serve.
Cameron Norrie and Andy Murray are scheduled to face one another in the second round of the 2022 Cincinnati Open on Wednesday, August 17. The tournament is scheduled to run from August 14 till August 21.
