Luca Van Assche, 18, was playing in his first Grand Slam main draw match after obtaining a wildcard for the competition for a while. He appeared to have performed admirably. In the first set, the world No. 143 broke Norrie three times to force a tiebreaker, which he won 2-0. Fortunately for Norrie, he found it after that and went on to win 12 of the next 15 games and 7 of the next 8 points to advance to the second round. Win by Norrie, 7-6 (3). 6-0, 6-3 in two hours and 24 minutes to move one step closer to his third-round showing at the Australian Open two seasons ago, which is his personal best.

Lestienne’s opening opponent Thiago Monteiro offered little in the way of competition, but bookmakers continued to rate Monteiro as the favourite. Lestienne had other plans because he not only won the first match, but also did so in a straight-sets victory. Lestienne won 6-3, 7-6 (2), 6-3 in a match that lasted two and a half hours to advance to the second round of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career.
