Yoshihito Nishioka defeated French qualifier Luca Van Assche in a thrilling match to maintain his chances of earning a seeding slot at the Australian Open the following year. After losing the first set 7-5 to the 18-year-old, Nishioka, whose performance during this autumn season has propelled him to a career-high ranking of No. 39, made amends. It was difficult to pinpoint a specific aspect of his game that was not functioning, but Van Assche deserves praise for playing better tennis and displaying maturity much beyond his years. However, Nishioka took control of this match after the second set, broke the qualifier three times to force a deciding. With so many twists and turns, the third set was just as exciting as the first.

You couldn’t really argue that Jaume Munar was the underdog going into his first-round encounter in Antwerp. His rival Van Rijthoven was skilled and accustomed to the playing circumstances; he had already earned two significant victories in qualifying. But in the longest match of the week so far on Tuesday, he defeated his Dutch rival despite dropping the opening set. After breaking Van Rijthoven at the start of the second set, the Spaniard used his persistent attitude and skill at counterpunching to force his way back into the match. In order to force a decider, he continued to consolidate in each of his service games. Munar also restored parity in the third set after trailing by a break. After the set entered a tiebreak, the winner was determined by a single mini-break.
