Dan Evans reached the semifinal in San Diego last week, continuing his strong play in the second half of the season, but he would still be upset to not have gone one step further after losing his semifinal match against the underdog Marcos Giron, 3-6, 5-7. After reaching the quarterfinal in Washington and semifinal at the Montreal Masters last month, former British No. 1 got his season back on track and reentered the top-25. He might be able to break into the top-20 group for the first time in his career if he keeps up his performance and continues to produce some strong performances. The 32-year-old had COVID, which prevented him from competing in the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. His most recent East Asian competition came in 2019, when he went 2-1 in first-round bouts, with both victories coming over Asian opponents Yan Bai in Chengdu and Zhe Li in Beijing.

Yoshihito Nishioka finished second to Nick Kyrgios at the Washington 500 last month, breaking a five-month dry spell on the main tour. However, he lost three of his subsequent four matches across all divisions, including his withdrawal at the Vancouver Challenger. The former Japanese No. 1 has won a few East Asian Challenger championships, and he also won the gold medal at the 2014 Asian Games, which were hosted in South Korea. Additionally, he won seven straight wins as a qualifier in Shenzhen (China) four years ago to win his lone ATP title.
