The quarterfinal of the 2022 Wimbledon will include a match between Jule Niemeier and Tatjana Maria, an all-German affair. Jule Niemeier, a 22-year-old German native of Dortmund, was little unknown until the past week. The people can’t be blame either because the German, who is ranked 97th in the world, has been concentrating primarily on the ITF and Challenger circuits. To be fair, Jule has performed admirably in 2022. She has a record of 29-13 and a title of each two circuits, She is now developing her form for the WTA tour as well. In Wimbledon, Jule has achieved victories over Xinyu Wang (6-1, 6-4), Anett Kontaveit (6-4, 6-0), Tsurenko (4-6, 6-3, 3-6) and local favourite Heather Watson (6-2, 6-4). She had previously advanced to the first round of two big tournaments in Paris and Melbourne. In London, she dropped only one set en route to delivering the finest Grand Slam and WTA performance of her career.
Tatjana Maria, age 34, has been a professional tennis player since the mid-2000s. She peaked at No. 46 in 2017 and is now rated No. 103, having returned to the tour only last season following a brief maternity break. On Sunday, she delivered the biggest win of her career to go to her first Grand Slam quarterfinal. She was up against number 12 seed Jelena Ostapenko, who had a fantastic run on grass. Maria won 5-7, 7-5, 7-5 after nearly two hours of play, saving two match points in the second set. Tatjana remained calm and drew on her extensive expertise to save vital break points and stage a comeback to win the set and match. In the previous round, she defeated number five seed Maria Sakkari in straight sets. Sorana Cirstea and Astra Sharma were her other two opponents at SW19.
Niemeier and Maria are scheduled to face each other on Tuesday, July 5 in the fourth round of the 2022 Championships. The timing of the match has not been decided yet. The Championships is scheduled to begin on June 27 and go on until July 10. There were a number of exciting matches on July 5 as the likes of Halep, Badosa, Anisimova and others will be in action.
