Nick Kyrgios might have a fair chance of winning the most prestigious Grand Slam on Sunday, July 10, but there awaits a storm back home, The brash Aussie has a habit of getting into trouble in the public sphere but this time, he certainly has taken things too far. Before he defeated Cristian Garin in the quarter-finals of the 2022 Wimbledon Championships, allegations came to light in Australia of domestic assault and before long, Kyrgios was charged with a case of common assault and his presence ordered by a court in Canberra. According to The Canberra Times, Key Chambers attorney Jason Moffett had given a statement regarding the situation. “It’s in the context of a domestic relationship. The nature of the allegation is serious, and Mr Kyrgios takes the allegation very seriously. Given the matter is before the court … he doesn’t have a comment at this stage, but in the fullness of time we’ll issue a media release,” Moffett said.

What are the charges?

Although Kyrgios’ name was not mentioned in an Australian Capital Territory Policing statement, the former world number 13’s attorney was described by The Canberra Times as suggesting that the charge was connected to a domestic relationship. According to Australian media, Kyrgios’ ex-partner Chiara Passari filed a complaint that was the basis for the charge. As per Wales Online, the incident allegedly happened in December 2021, and the charge pertains to a claim that Kyrgios seized his ex-girlfriend Passari.

“ACT Policing can confirm a 27-year-old Watson man is scheduled to face the ACT Magistrates Court on the 2nd of August in relation to one charge of common assault following an incident in December 2021,” the ACT statement read.

What is the maximum punishment?

As per the Canberra Times, the charges carry a two-year maximum prison penalty. A domestic abuse advocacy group Solace Women’s Aid has demanded that Kyrgios be disqualified from competing in The Championships. It claimed that since Wimbledon felt free to bar players from Belarus and Russia in response to the conflict in Ukraine, similar measures should be taken. Due to ongoing legal processes, the All England Club, which organises Wimbledon, stated that it would not be commenting on the Kyrgios situation.

Kyrgios at Wimbledon so far

After quite a while, Kyrgios seems to be back at his best in tennis and will face Novak Djokovic in the final of Wimbledon. The Aussie received a walkover victory against Rafael Nadal in the semi-final after the Spaniard withdrew due to injury concerns. Kyrgios has beaten the likes of Cristian Garin, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Brandon Nakashima, Filip Krajinovic and Paul Jubb so far in the tournament.
