Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios has been ordered to appear in court in Canberra in August over allegations that he assaulted his ex-girlfriend in 2021. According to The Canberra Times, the charge carries a two-year maximum prison penalty. As per the magazine, Key Chambers attorney Jason Moffett had been briefed on the situation. Kyrgios is presently competing in the Wimbledon tennis tournament. On Wednesday, he will compete against Christian Garin in the men’s singles quarterfinal.

“It’s in the context of a domestic relationship. The nature of the allegation is serious, and Mr Kyrgios takes the allegation very seriously. Given the matter is before the court … he doesn’t have a comment at this stage, but in the fullness of time we’ll issue a media release,” Moffett said.

Despite being one of the most popular personalities in tennis today, Kyrgios has never been someone who has been liked by the majority of fans. His abrasive nature on and off the pitch is not exactly conducive and although he does undeniably play outstanding tennis, the Aussie can be quite unapproachable at times.

Aussie already fined at Wimbledon

At the Wimbledon Championships this year, the 27-year-old Australian has already received two fines and he may receive a third after entering the court on Monday for his fourth-round match against Brandon Nakashima while wearing red sneakers. After winning the match in five sets, he switched back to his red shoes and wore a red cap during the on-court interview. He had worn white during the match.

“Because I do what I want,” Kyrgios had said when asked about the matter. “No, I’m not above the rules. I just like wearing my Jordans. That’s okay. I’ll wear some Triple Whites tomorrow,” he added. For his two offenses—spitting at a spectator after his first-round victory and swearing during his heated third-round match with Stefanos Tsitsipas—Kyrgios has been fined a total of USD 14,000.

Moving into the Wimbledon last eight

This last week, Nick Kyrgios has been intensely focused, and it has paid off. He has looked reliable at the championship after a strong performance on grass at Halle and a preemptive withdrawal at Mallorca. After a thrilling third-round battle against Stefanos Tsitsipas, he advanced to the round of 16, where he faced American player Brandon Nakashima. Kyrgios dropped the first set and appeared to have a shoulder niggle that required medical attention, but there was no halting his momentum as he claimed the second set with a single break of service and the third in a tiebreak. When he was broken twice by Nakashima in the fourth set, the Aussie performance deteriorated, and the match went to a decider. By breaking serve twice in the fifth game, Kyrgios completely took control of the match. For the first time since his debut in 2014, when he reached the quarterfinals at Wimbledon, he has secured a place in the final eight.
