Iga Swiatek, the current world No. 1, will return in an effort to win her third straight Internazionali BNL d'Italia championship.
The initial entries for the prestigious clay-court event were announced this week, and all of the Top 25 WTA Tour players will play in Rome for the 80th edition of the WTA Italian Open. The fifth WTA 1000 tournament of the year’s main draw will take place from Tuesday, May 9 through the singles and doubles finals on Saturday, May 20, a period of almost a full fortnight. Iga Swiatek, the current world No. 1, will return in an effort to win her third straight Internazionali BNL d’Italia championship. Swiatek won the title in 2021 by defeating Karolina Pliskova 6-0, 6-0 in the championship match. The following year, she successfully defended her title with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Ons Jabeur.
In the battle to unseat Swiatek, Aryna Sabalenka, this year’s Australian Open champion, is the second seed. The remaining three Top 5 competitors are No. 3 Jessica Pegula, No. 4 Jabeur, and No. 5 Caroline Garcia. The remaining members of the Top 10 will also be considered: Coco Gauff, No. 6, Elena Rybakina, No. 7, Daria Kasatkina, No. 9, Maria Sakkari, and Petra Kvitova are the next four players.
The initial entry list for Rome also features Alizé Cornet, who reached the 2008 final as an 18-year-old, 2013 runner-up Victoria Azarenka, 2016 finalist Madison Keys, and Jabeur. Barbora Krejcikova, Emma Raducanu, Jelena Ostapenko, Sloane Stephens, Sofia Kenin, and Bianca Andreescu are some of the other Grand Slam winners who participated. Andreescu is still on the entry list despite recovering from an ankle injury she sustained in Miami.
For the first time since giving birth to her daughter Ska last year, Elina Svitolina, who won back-to-back Rome championships in 2017 and 2018, will compete in the competition. Swiatek and Svitolina are the other two former winners in the field, joining former World No. 1 Pliskova, who won the championship in 2019. Italians No. 20 Martina Trevisan, No. 43 Camila Giorgi, No. 51 Elisabetta Cocciaretto, and No. 66 Jasmine Paolini all received direct entry into the main draw on home soil.
