Tommy Paul lost a chance to win a championship at home in Delray Beach a few weeks ago after playing one of his worst matches in recent memory, falling to the underdog and out-of-shape Radu Albot with a score of 2-6 2-6 in the quarterfinals. In 2022, the former Boys’ French Open champion competed in events at the ATP 500 and Masters level and achieved an impressive total of ten quarterfinal or better finishes. In the early months of 2023, he has already made progress after making it to the Australian Open semifinals. Although he has twice advanced to the quarterfinals of the ATP Acapulco tournament, his other tournament runs have all ended in the first round.
In Dallas earlier this month, Emilio Gomez finally broke his long winless streak in the tour-level main draw, and he went on to advance to the quarterfinals by defeating Miomir Kecmanovic and Gabriel Diallo. The following week, he defeated Tung-lin Wu in two close sets to earn his second main-draw victory at this level. He then competed admirably against eventual champion Taylor Fritz in Delray Beach. The Ecuadorian No. 1 had previously attempted to reach the main draw in both of his ATP Acapulco campaigns in 2019 and 2022, but was unsuccessful. He does, however, have a career-high ranking of #90, which grants him this week’s direct entry into the main draw.
