The main draw of the tournament is scheduled to begin on Monday, February 27 and conclude on Sunday, March 5.
Fans are in for an exciting week of tennis in Acapulco as the 30th Mexican Open gets underway on February 27. Rafael Nadal won’t be defending his title, but other players like Carlos Alcaraz and Casper Ruud will. The ATP 500 event will feature an intriguing player field thanks to the participation of players like Taylor Fritz, Holger Rune, Frances Tiafoe, and Matteo Berrettini. The Abierto Mexicano Telcel, also referred to as the Mexican Open, is a hard-court outdoor competition held in Acapulco. With the exception of 2021, it has been a yearly event since its inception in 1993 and is a part of the ATP 500 series.
The Mexican Open originally took place on clay courts but switched to hard courts in 2014. Former World No. 1 Thomas Muster of Austria won the competition’s inaugural edition by defeating Carlos Costa of Spain 6-2, 6-4 in the championship match. Rafael Nadal, David Ferrer, and Muster share the record for most victories at the Mexican Open with four each. In the tournament’s past, winners like Gustavo Kuerten, Carlos Moya, and Dominic Thiem have also prevailed. In the final, Rafael Nadal defeated Cameron Norrie 6-4, 6-4 to win the event last year.
The 2023 ATP Mexican Open will have five rounds of play excluding the qualifying rounds. These are the round of 32, round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals.
