Taylor Fritz and John Isner will face each other in the first round of the 2023 Mexican Open on Monday, February 27.
Taylor Fritz’s hopes were finally realised in Delray Beach after being let down at the Australian Open and Dallas, where he only advanced to the second round and semifinals, respectively. Despite giving weak performances all week, he was still able to win every match and secure the title. The top-ranked American would have undoubtedly gained confidence from winning the Delray Beach title and would have been better prepared for the upcoming month of March, when he will be vying for a significant number of ranking points at the Indian Wells Masters, where he won the biggest title of his career in 2022. The 25-year-old has made four trips to Acapulco so far and has alternately advanced to the quarterfinals, with the best result coming in 2020 when he finished second to Rafael Nadal.
John Isner left Australia with no victories (0-2), but as was predicted, as soon as he set foot on American hard courts, he started winning again. He won over players like Daniel Altmaier and Jeffrey John Wolf before falling to Yibing Wu in a nail-biting three-set final in Dallas. Four of the eight times the former American No. 1 competed in Acapulco, his campaigns were eliminated in the first round. It’s important to note that he has prevailed in his last four first-round contests at this tournament, which date from 2019 to 2022. Additionally, in 2019 and 2020, he made it all the way to the semifinals twice.

4-2 in favour of John Isner. When they last faced off in the ATP Atlanta semifinals in 2021, John Isner was the current American No. 1 and had won that match in three sets. But a lot has changed since then, with Taylor Fritz now routinely ranking among the top 10 players in the world in addition to assuming the #1 American ranking. He is therefore regarded as the overwhelming favourite to triumph in their upcoming all-American match in Mexico.
