Mikael Ymer and Francesco Passaro will face each other in the first round of the 2023 Dubai Tennis Championships on Monday, February 28.
Both good and bad fortune met Mikael Ymer in Marseille last week. Despite having quite a few chances in the decisive set, he was unfortunate to lose to eventual champion Hubert Hurkacz in the quarterfinals after receiving a walkover from former world #7 David Goffin in the second round. Despite having lost four first-round matches in the past two months, the Swede has had a respectable start to the year with 15 out of a possible 22 victories. His best performances were quarterfinal appearances in Adelaide and Marseille, as well as finishing David Goffin’s runner-up at the Ottignies-Louvain-la-Neuve Challenger.
The 24-year-old earlier this week reached his career-high ranking of #59 as a result of these excellent early-year performances. It’s unclear whether he can keep moving up the rankings or if they will fall in the upcoming months because he had trouble keeping them steady last year.
Recently, Francesco Passaro participated in three qualifying matches in the Middle East, but he was unable to complete any of the matches. However, he was given one of the four lucky loser spots in the ATP Dubai main draw. The young Italian athlete advanced significantly in the ATP rankings last year, moving up nearly 500 spots. He was given a wildcard opportunity in an Italian tournament at the end of the year due to his impressive progress, and he made good use of it by defeating lucky loser Zhizhen Zhang in the opening round of the ATP Florence.
