Mayar Sherif enters the Merida Open having only won one main tournament match in 2023. That happened in the first round of the Lyon tournament in early February, when she overcame Ana Konjuh. Sherif would go on to lose in straight sets to Czech teenage phenomenon Linda Noskova in the following round. Sherif was getting his first taste of indoor hard courts, having never played on the surface professionally. The Egyptian just broke into the world’s top 50 for the first time, marking a watershed moment for the 26-year-old and making her the first player from her country to accomplish so.
