Madison Keys and Victoria Azarenka will take on each other in the second round of the 2023 WTA Dubai Open on February 22.
The recent success of Caroline Garcia didn’t deter Madison Keys. Despite 39 unforced errors compared to 19 winners, she won 7-5, 6-4 for the fourth time in a row over the French player. She has advanced to the last 16 in Dubai for the first time after defeating Jasmine Paolini 6-1, 6-1 on her second appearance in the competition. She had a strong 5-0 performance to start the season at the United Cup, but she has yet to reach the quarterfinals. In the final months of the previous season, the former US Open finalist may have advanced to the quarterfinals of Cincinnati and San Diego, but she hasn’t advanced that far away from home since the Australian Open more than a year ago.
Victoria Azarenka faced off against Amanda Anisimova in a thrilling match to continue her fourth career appearance in Dubai. In their second round, there were a total of 28 breakpoints and 14 serve breaks. She won 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 by coming back from a set and break down as well as from 1-3 and 3-5 in the decider. She travelled to Dubai in search of her first victory since 2011. For a player who finished as its runner-up in 2010, it was long overdue. She has recently improved thanks to a WTA 1000 semifinal appearance in Guadalajara in October and her first Grand Slam semifinal in two years. Since the beginning of August, she has a 20-9 win-loss record.

Victoria Azarenka has a 4-0 lead. The American was defeated by the Belarusian twice in the past four months in the third rounds of Guadalajara and the Australian Open, despite her winning their first two encounters in straight sets. As she tries to reach her third quarterfinal of the 2023 season, she will probably have the advantage.
