The 2023 Dubai Tennis Championships, which will take place from February 19–25, will serve as the first WTA 1000 tournament of the year. Iga Swiatek, the current world No. 1, is seeded first, while Aryna Sabalenka is seeded second. After her success at the Australian Open, Sabalenka will make her return to competition. Caroline Garcia and Jessica Pegula complete the top four seeds. 3 in the world Only Ons Jabeur, who is recovering from surgery, is out of the top 10 players this week. The tournament promises a tonne of exciting matches one after the other thanks to an absurdly strong draw.

In 1993, the competition was an ATP-only affair; in 2001, the women’s tour began to compete there. Up until 2008, it was categorised as a WTA Premier (WTA 500) competition. For the following three editions, it was elevated to the Premier 5 (WTA 1000) category before reverting to its previous standing. Alongside the Qatar Open, the competition has alternated between the WTA 500 and WTA 1000 since 2015. Venus Williams comes in second place among female champions with three titles, following Justine Henin with four.

Schedule and Dates

The 2023 WTA Dubai Tennis Championships will have five rounds of play excluding the qualifying rounds. These are the round of 32, round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals. The main draw of the tournament is scheduled to begin on Sunday, February 19 and conclude on Saturday February 25. Here is the tentative round-wise schedule of the WTA 1000 event.

Seeds

First-round byes have been granted to the top eight seeds. The top half of the draw features Iga Swiatek, Maria Sakkari, Caroline Garcia, and Coco Gauff, all of whom will start their campaigns in the second round. Swiatek and Sakkari might face off against Leylah Fernandez and Karolina Pliskova, respectively, in the opening round. In a thrilling first-round matchup, Bianca Andreescu will take on Elena Rybakina. Among the other well-known players in the top half of the draw are Paula Badosa, Veronika Kudermetova, and Qinwen Zheng. The bottom half of the draw is supported by Aryna Sabalenka, Jessica Pegula, Belinda Bencic, and Daria Kasatkina.

Along with Kasatkina, Sabalenka, Pegula, Bencic, and all of them have first-round byes. Marta Kostyuk is likely to be Bencic’s first opponent in her title defence, while Pegula might play the giant-killer Kaia Kanepi in the second round. The first contest Sabalenka plays after winning the Australian Open might be against Anastasia Potapova or Jil Teichmann. The first opponent for Jelena Ostapenko’s title defence will be a qualifier. Other noteworthy players in the bottom half of the draw include Shelby Rogers, Petra Kvitova, Barbora Krejcikova, Danielle Collins, and Danielle Collins. You can find the women’s draw right here.

Prize money & points

$2,788,468 will be awarded in prizes at the 2023 Dubai Tennis Championships. The female singles champion will receive a check for $454,500 as well as 900 ranking points.
