Hubert Hurkacz’s season got off to a rough start with a few underwhelming appearances in Rotterdam and Australia last month. But he began his campaign by taking the crown in Marseille last week. Despite his inconsistent play throughout the week, he was still able to prevail in four of his matches against Leandro Riedi, Mikael Ymer, Alexander Bublik, and Benjamin Bonzi. The top-ranked Pole has participated in 14 matches so far in 2023, and in ten of them, he has lost at least one set.
If some of his competitors, like Lorenzo Sonego at the Australian Open and Mikael Ymer in Marseille, had taken advantage of their opportunities and won, his season would be in a very different place right now. He made his first semifinal appearance of the 2022 season here in Dubai, and in two of his previous four visits, he had advanced at least that far in the competition.
After quitting his final qualifying round two days ago, Alexander Shevchenko now faces the toughest test of his career: a match against a top-15 player. He fell to his countryman Pavel Kotov on Sunday, losing 3-6, 0-2; as a lucky loser, he will now play in the main draw.
The winner of the Tenerife Challenger last month has now entered an ATP tournament’s main draw as a lucky loser twice. He also followed this path to the ATP Kitzbuhel main draw a few months ago, where he fell to former world #3 Dominic Thiem in the opening round.
