Felix Auger-Aliassime, ranked ninth in the world, will play Maxime Cressy, ranked 37th, in the opening round of the 2023 ATP Dubai Open on Tuesday.
This contrast is intriguing. In contrast to Cressy, who has a record of seven victories from 12 games, Auger-Aliassime has won seven of the 11 matches he has played. It provides insight into both Cressy’s performances and the Canadian’s difficulties this season. Cressy has one strong performance under his belt for the season despite losing in the second round of three competitions last week, including the Australian Open, Rotterdam Open, and Marseille Open. The American defeated Borna Coric, Emil Ruusuvuori, and Holger Rune on route to reaching the Montpellier Open final. He has already been expelled by Rune from the Australian Open. And although Cressy was unable to defeat Jannik Sinner in the title battle, he had accomplished enough to pose a significant threat to Auger-Aliassime in this contest.
Even thus early in the season, a win-loss record of 7-4 cannot be considered poor, but Auger-Aliassime would have preferred to perform far better. Definitely preferable to losing in the opening round of the Adelaide International. And much more so after dropping out of the Australian Open in the fourth round. Following that, Auger-Aliassime won consecutive matches in the Rotterdam Open and the Doha Open, although she was unable to complete a winning streak of three. He was defeated by Daniil Medvedev both times. The same player entered the season in 2022 with four tournament victories. He hasn’t yet reached a final this year, too. Auger-Aliassime has looked a little unsteady even in the matches he has won, including the three rounds at the Australian Open where he needs four, five, and four sets, respectively. Forget about making the final. Can he now put those problems behind him and try to advance further in this competition?
