Felix Auger-Aliassime and Lorenzo Sonego will face each other in the second round of the 2023 Dubai Tennis Championships on Wednesday, March 1.
Felix Auger Aliassime faced a difficult task in the opening round of his inaugural ATP Dubai campaign this week, but he overcame it and defeated Maxime Cressy in a gruelling three-set match, 7-6 3-6 6-3. The tournament’s top-ranked Canadian lost several chances to convert break points against Maxime Cressy in the opening round and will need to get better at this if he wants to move on. He produced an impressive 14 break-point opportunities, but only one of them was successful. He has at least two victories in each of his last three tournaments, but given his strong performance and the ranking points he has earned thus far in 2022, this may not be enough. To put things in perspective, he only reached the quarterfinals twice this month, but in February 2022, he won his first ATP title in Rotterdam and finished as runner-up in Marseille the following week.
In the opening round of the ATP Dubai, Lorenzo Sonego eliminated a struggling Marc-Andrea Huesler to end his three-match losing streak and get back on the winning track. He lost his second match of the 2021 campaign in three sets to eventual champion Aslan Karatsev, who was also making his tournament debut at the time. Although the Italian has lost the majority of his games this year, he has put on strong performances and has good reason to be optimistic. He challenged Daniil Medvedev in the ATP Adelaide first round, had a chance to defeat Hubert Hurkacz in straight sets at the Australian Open, and had numerous chances, including match points, to defeat eventual runner-up Andy Murray.

Leading 2-0 is Felix Auger Aliassime (4-0 in sets). Felix Auger Aliassime has a good chance of winning and moving on in the Dubai tournament, even though it’s possible that he won’t have the same level of dominance over Lorenzo Sonego as he did in their previous match in Rotterdam earlier this month.
