Casper Ruud and Taro Daniel will face each other in the second round of the 2023 Mexican Open on Thursday, March 2.
Guido Andreozzi, who had missed nearly half of the 2022 season due to injury and had not triumphed in a main-draw match at this level since 2019, was narrowly defeated by Casper Ruud. The second seed twice overcame break deficits to win the first set; he forfeited his serve early in the second set; and in the deciding set, 6-4 4-6 7-6, he saved back-to-back breakpoints at 5-5. His participation in Rafael Nadal’s exhibition tour of Latin America in the off-season seems to be having a negative impact on his performance in 2023. As a result of his demanding campaign at the highest level in 2022, this tour prevented him from getting the rest and preparation time he needed for the current season.
He has struggled against opponents like Laslo Djere and Tomas Machac earlier in the season, and he has yet to win back-to-back games in 2023. He dropped a set to the Czech teenager at the Australian Open a few days after losing to the Serbian in Auckland last month despite being up a set. The runner-up at the Miami Masters and US Open in 2022 is unbeaten in three games in Acapulco. He only participated once in this competition in 2021, beating Daniel Elahi Galan and Tallon Griekspoor before quitting before the quarterfinals.
In the opening round of the ATP Acapulco, Taro Daniel put on by far his best performance of the year to upset world no. 44 Jeffrey John Wolf. The Japanese player had earlier in the year lost to Ajeet Rai and Borna Gojo, so this was a marked improvement. At the Australian Open and Monterrey Challenger, he defeated Ernesto Escobedo and Steve Johnson, respectively, and both times lost in the second round. His previous main-draw victories this year at all levels came against US-born opponents.
