Casper Ruud and Guido Andreozzi will face each other in the first round of the 2023 Mexican Open on Monday, February 28.
Casper Ruud’s off-season exhibition tour of Latin America last year turned out to be an expensive venture because he appeared worn out in the few games he played last month. He dropped three out of five matches, including one against Laslo Djere, and gave up a set to Tomas Machac in the Australian Open first round. After taking a short break, the Norwegian is now anticipated to be in much better physical shape than when he was in Australia last month. The absolute minimum was to give himself a good off-season, something he failed to do after a long and taxing season at the highest level in 2022.
The world #4 played admirably on clay during a very successful season in 2022, as he always had, and he also kept getting better on hard courts by making it far into the Miami Masters and US Open. A few months ago, he was just one victory away from overtaking Carlos Alcaraz as the new world number one (at the US Open). The 24-year-old defeated Daniel Elahi Galan and Tallon Griekspoor during his first and only previous campaign in 2021, when he made his first quarterfinal appearance on outdoor hard courts (in tour-level competitions), before exiting the quarterfinals.
Less than eight months after returning from the injury break, Guido Andreozzi is in the main draw of a tour-level event thanks to his recent dedication to the lower-level circuits. Three years ago, the Argentine qualifier defeated Ivo Karlovic in two tiebreakers in the first round of a tour-level tournament in Newport. He has never faced a top-10 player in his career and is currently 10-15 on the main tour.
