In the 2023 ATP Buenos Aires Open final on Monday, Argentina's Carlos Alcaraz, the second-ranked player in the world, takes on Cameron Norrie, who is rated number twelve.
After victories over Dominic Thiem and Lorenzo Musetti, Juan Pablo Varillas had been enjoying a strong run in the competition. These victories helped him advance to the semifinals. Yet despite the fact that he fought hard against Norrie, the outcome of the match was certain. In one hour and 54 minutes, Norrie prevailed 7-6 (5), 6-4 to secure a spot in the championship match. In the opening set, the two players exchanged serve breaks, and despite Norrie having set points in both the 10th and 12th games, Varillas was able to save all of them. The British number one needed a tiebreaker to win the opening set. In the second, Norrie quickly built a 2-0 lead. From that point on, the goal was to maintain the lead, which he expertly did. He did have two break points while serving for the match, but he avoided both of them to secure his spot in the championship match. Although Norrie has already had a few impressive victories on clay in this tournament, including one over Tomas Etcheverry, things might get challenging against Alcaraz.
Alcaraz’s initial victory in this competition, which was also his first game of the season, required some time for him to settle down, but he appears to have found his rhythm since then. The world number two extended his winning streak with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Bernabe Zapata Miralles to advance to the tournament’s championship match. This was his first matchback following his fitness setbacks. Before Alcaraz, Zapata Miralles had upset Francisco Cerundolo in the quarterfinals, but Alcaraz needed just one hour and seventeen minutes on the court to defeat him. Alcaraz had a raging first set, breaking his opponent twice, and finished the match winning 73% of his first serve points. Alcaraz appeared to be following the similar pattern in the second game as he jumped out to a 4-1 lead, only to falter slightly when Zapata Miralles out-served him in the sixth game. Alcaraz had no issues, though, as he broke back immediately before serving it out to love to win his seventh ATP tournament final. Can Alcaraz win a seventh championship?
