Thursday's second round of the 2023 WTA Merida Open pits 68th-ranked Camila Giorgi of Italy against 79th-ranked Nuria Parrizas Diaz.
Ana Konjuh put up a strong performance in the opening match before Parrizas Diaz defeated her in three sets. Ana Konjuh required two qualifying victories to advance and make the main draw. Parrizas Diaz defeated Konjuh 6-4, 6-7 (2), 6-2 after losing her serve twice in a contest that lasted almost two hours. When Parrizas Diaz broke Konjuh early in the opening set, things appeared to be going her way. She had three additional chances to break Konjuh the very next game, but she never encountered a break-point on her own serve. The writing appeared to be on the wall for Konjuh when she went up 4-2 in the second. But, Konjuh rallied back to force a tie-breaker, which she won, and the set was not over. However, Konjuh appeared to have suffered as a result, and Parrizas Diaz was able to win the final set with ease. This comes after Parrizas Diaz lost her previous three games, which may be relieving but also reveals how bad her form has been.
Giorgi’s season has gotten off to a slow start, but she did well to get things going in Merida with a victory. The world number 68 defeated Mayar Sherif in straight sets to go to the second round, earning her fourth victory of the year. Giorgi won in one hour and 18 minutes, 6-4, 6-2. Giorgi, who lost in the second round of Linz after making it to the third round of the Australian Open, played well in the opening set, facing no break points and breaking her opponent’s serve just once. In the second set, both players dropped their serves in quick succession early on, but Camila Giorgi went on a four-game winning streak to take the match. Can she now raise the stakes while playing a player of Parrizas Diaz’s caliber? We’ll choose Giorgi to advance to the round of eight with a second-round victory that should be pretty simple. Maybe even a straight-setter is present here.
