On Sunday, the world's number 47 Katerina Siniakova will compete in the semifinal of the 2023 WTA Merida Open against the 68th-ranked Camila Giorgi.
There wasn’t much to pick between Siniakova and Elisabetta Cocciaretto in their quarterfinal matchup, and as some would have anticipated, it ended up being a three-setter. The way it actually turned out, however, was peculiar. In a contest that lasted over two hours and featured four serve breaks, Siniakova prevailed 6-1, 5-7, 6-0. In the entire match, neither player was able to accomplish anything with their second serves, losing 60% and 62% of those points respectively. Their individual first serves made the difference, with Siniakova winning 68% and her opponent only achieving 46%. Can Siniakova now subdue her Italian rival to get to her eighth singles final in her career?
Giorgi defeated second-seeded Sloane Stephens 6-0, 6-0 in the first match of her career to advance to the semifinal. Giorgi needed just 48 minutes to dispatch her American opponent, winning 24 of the 29 points on her own serve. On Giorgi’s serve, Stephens never managed to gain more than a point in any of the games. Stephens had three games remaining in the match on her own serve, so it’s not like she lacked opportunities. Nonetheless, she was unable to take any of them. Giorgi extended her winning streak in the match, slamming 12 winners and only five unforced errors. Earlier in the event, she had eliminated Nuria Parrizas Diaz and Mayar Sherif. In 2014, Giorgi made her WTA Tour debut. She advanced to the Katowice Open final before taking home her first victory in the Rosmalen Open. By defeating former world number one Karolina Plisková in the final of the 2021 National Bank Open in Montréal, she won her maiden major title. Having not reached a final since the Canadian Open in 2021, can she now turn the corner and do so?
