After spending a few weeks playing on clay in South America, where he had successful campaigns in Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro, Cameron Norrie has switched back to playing on hard courts. These competitions revealed his attitude and character as a competitor, which have significantly contributed to his rise to the top-10 players, making up for his lack of natural talent. In Buenos Aires, he came in second place to world No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz. Exactly one week later, in Rio de Janeiro, he stunned the same opponent by coming back from 5-7 0-3 (0*-30) and winning the match. His matches in South America were difficult because he competed fiercely with regional experts on clay courts and was forced to play four three-setter matches.

The South African-born Briton finally succeeded in winning his first ATP title in a Mexican tournament in Los Cabos two years ago, defeating players like Taylor Fritz and Brandon Nakashima without dropping a set, after four unsuccessful tries between ATP Auckland 2019 and ATP London 2021. Over the years, the world’s #12 has performed remarkably well in Mexico. In three of the four ATP Los Cabos seasons, he advanced at least to the semifinals, and in the final ATP Acapulco tournament in 2022, he placed second.

Adrian Mannarino has only four victories in the ATP Acapulco tournament and has never advanced past the second round. However, it is noteworthy that one of his victories came in the first round of the 2020 competition against Cameron Norrie. The seasoned Frenchman participated in a Mexican Challenger tournament in Monterrey to get ready for this ATP 500 tournament there, where he was defeated in the opening round by the underdog Aleksandar Kovacevic in two close sets.
