Brandon Nakashima and Daniel Altmaier will face each other in the first round of the 2023 Mexican Open on Wednesday, March 1.
Both of Brandon Nakashima’s matches so far in 2023 have been close calls. In the second leg of the ATP Adelaide, he lost in a second-set tiebreaker to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, and in the opening round of the Australian Open, he was defeated in five sets by fellow countryman Mackenzie McDonald. After making it to the finals in 2021 and the quarterfinals in 2022 at the other Mexican ATP event in Los Cabos, the talented American experienced great success. But despite two tries, he has yet to establish himself in the ATP Acapulco main draw. His most recent match here in 2022 ended in a discouraging straight-set loss to a German opponent, 4-6 4-6 against Peter Gojowczyk in R1.
This year, Daniel Altmaier has put on some promising performances, but regrettably, he has not been able to take advantage of them, winning just one of his five matches on the main tour. In a crucial Davis Cup match, he lost from a set up to Thiago Monteiro in Auckland, fell to Stan Wawrinka in three close sets, and then blew a set and a break lead to Adrian Mannarino in Delray Beach. Last year, the German, 24, had a dismal 1-10 record in the opening round of hard-court competitions on the main tour. One of his defeats came at the ATP Acapulco tournament, where he competed as a qualifier and fell to Cameron Norrie in straight sets.

0-0. Brandon Nakashima hasn’t participated in a competitive match since the Australian Open and withdrew from ATP Dallas earlier this month. It is unclear whether his performance against the very capable Daniel Altmaier will be impacted by the recent lack of match play.
