Botic van de Zandschulp and Mikael Ymer will face each other in the second round of the 2023 Dubai Tennis Championships on Wednesday, March 1.
Botic Van De Zandschulp’s best victory of the season, a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Karen Khachanov in Round 1, came when he finally faced a rival who had more serving issues than he did. The Russian appeared rusty from the beginning to the end because he hadn’t played in a competitive match in a month. The top-ranked Dutchman had to fend off five breakpoints in just two sets of his match against Karen Khachanov. This year, he has struggled with his serve, and he has only won one match with fewer than five breakpoint opportunities. The world’s #33 player has competed in three more tournaments since reaching the semifinals of his first one in Pune, but he has failed to win his second match of each of those competitions. He suffered defeats last week to Alexandre Muller in Doha, Tallon Griekspoor in Rotterdam, and Daniil Medvedev at the Australian Open.
Mikael Ymer easily defeated lucky loser Francesco Passaro, who lacked experience at this level and was going through a difficult time, to advance to the second round of the ATP Dubai tournament. The gifted Swede has twice overcome the first-round hurdle in his previous six appearances on the main tour this year, and last week, he advanced to the quarterfinals of both tournaments in the second legs of the ATP Adelaide and Marseille.
