Belinda Bencic and Karolina Muchova will take on each other in the second round of the 2023 WTA Dubai Open on February 22.
Belinda Bencic withdrew from the quarterfinal round of the Qatar Open last week due to exhaustion, and she is likely to be even more exhausted after her match against Marta Kostyuk in the opening round. After falling behind a set and 1-3 in the match, she fought back and won 6-7, 7-6, 6-4 in three hours and 27 minutes by surviving three breakpoints. Three minutes separated the match from breaking the WTA season record for length. With victories in Adelaide, Abu Dhabi, and a fourth-round appearance in Melbourne, the Swiss player is currently without a doubt the season’s leading match winner. She’ll be excited to compete in her second quarterfinal in Dubai, where she won the WTA 1000 title in 2019.
Sorana Cirstea defeated Beatriz Haddad Maia in a two-hour, 20-minute match that Karolina Muchova won in straight sets. In the first set, she trailed by a break, and in the second, she was two points away from losing. The former top 20 player won 6-4, 7-6 by converting four of 14 breakpoint opportunities. In contrast to her first-round exit in 2020, she started her second appearance at the tournament with a straight-set victory over Bernarda Pera. The Czech player, who has been recovering from a protracted injury break for eleven months, is aiming to reach her third quarterfinal this time around after victories in the WTA 250 tournaments in Tallinn and Auckland.
