Andrey Rublev and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina will face each other in the second round of the 2023 Dubai Tennis Championships on Wednesday, March 1.
Andrey Rublev appeared to be on the verge of suffering his fourth opening-round defeat in five ATP tournaments this year, but he was able to turn the tide towards the end of the opening set and went on to easily defeat the stern opponent Filip Krajinovic, 7-5 6-2. In order to win this year’s lone ATP match, he had to make a comeback. In the opening round of the ATP Doha, he overcame a poor start and saved match points against Tallon Griekspoor before being defeated by Jiri Lehecka in the quarterfinals. The top-ranked Russian has recently been one of the best competitors in ATP 500 tournaments, and he has a great record in Dubai, having advanced at least as far as the quarterfinals in each of his previous three main-draw campaigns and taking home the victory in the most recent edition in 2022.
Earlier this week, Malek Jaziri was defeated by Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the opening round of the ATP Dubai. Due to Jaziri’s prior successes and the support he typically receives from the crowd at this venue, it was still a difficult test even though the Tunisian’s recent form made it seem like an easy match for the Spaniard. The gifted youngster from Spain hopes to make it to his third quarterfinal outing on the main tour this year. It won’t be simple, though, as he has only triumphed in three of his career’s 18 matches against players ranked in the top 10, and it’s important to note that none of those victories came on hard courts.
