Brandon Nakashima reached his first ATP final in Los Cabos in 2021, following convincing victories against John Isner and Sam Querrey. After a year, it is apparent that he is one of the sport’s top young players. The American has risen to the top of the rankings in 2022, and would be much higher if his amazing 4th round performance at Wimbledon had been worth 180 points. The sixth seed in Los Cabos has been steadily improving this year, but he is still looking for his first ATP victory. Given his performance last year, it would not be surprising if he met that target this week.

Kaichi Uchida, a qualifier, has only competed in one ATP competition, the Davis Cup in 2021, when he defeated Pakistan’s Aisam Qureshi on grass. This is his first main tour match on hard courts, and he will have a stiff test against one of America’s emerging talents. Uchida, the Japanese number three, has had a successful 2022 season, particularly on clay, where he won the challenger tournament in Oeiras earlier this month. Given that the 2021 champion was Carlos Alcaraz, who is currently world number four, the 27-year-old may still think he has time to establish a name for himself on the main circuit.
