The 2022 ATP Atlanta Open quarterfinal matchup pits world number 29 Frances Tiafoe against fellow American and 56th-ranked Brandon Nakashima on Saturday.
Due to his previous round victory over Sebastian Korda, Taro Daniel entered his second round match with a lot of confidence. However, Frances Tiafoe was having none of it and defeated Daniel in straight sets to secure his position in the final eight. In a close match that took an hour and 41 minutes to complete, Tiafoe defeated Daniel by scores of 7-5 and 6-4. Before Tiafoe earned the first serve break of the match in the 11th game of the opening set, it appeared that a tiebreaker would be necessary. The following set was finished off by him. In the second set, Tiafoe twice beat a faltering Daniel’s serve—in the third and fifth games—and while the Japanese player eventually grabbed one back, it was ultimately too little, too late.
Nakashima had little trouble defeating John Millman in the second round after barely defeating Jordan Thompson in the opening round. In a match that lasted one hour and 52 minutes, Nakashima—who had advanced to the fourth round at Wimbledon—beat the Australian 7-6 (8), 6-4. The 56th-ranked Nakashima saved three set points in the first tiebreaker and then converted his second to take the lead in a match in which neither player gave an inch for the majority of the time. The sole serve break of the whole match occurred in the fifth game of the second set, giving Nakashima the chance to win the match in straight sets and advance to the round of eight.
Frances Tiafoe and Brandon Nakashima will take on each other on Saturday, July 30 in the quarterfinal of the 2022 Atlanta Open. The competition is scheduled to commence on July 25 and conclude on July 31 this year.
