Brandon Nakashima and Altuğ Çelikbilek are scheduled to face each other in the second round of the 2022 ATP Firenze Open on October 13.
Despite his early exit from the Japan Open last week, Brandon Nakashima, who won his first ATP title less than two weeks ago, has continued to demonstrate his mettle. The American, who has risen to his career-high ranking of 46th in the world, defeated French veteran Richard Gasquet 6-2, 6-2 in a one-hour and five-minute match to advance to the second round. Nakashima cruised to victory with two breaks in each of the two sets, despite having no trouble holding his serve and facing no break-points throughout the match. Nakashima, who lost in the second round to Borna Coric in Tokyo, will now face a player ranked 230th in the world.
With no previous ATP victory and having never qualified for the main draw of a Grand Slam, celikbilek wasn’t expected to do much coming into this tournament qualifiers. To then defeat Roman Safiullin in the first qualifying round despite being a 3/1 underdog in the match was an accomplishment in itself. And then to beat the experienced Italian Andrea Vavassori in the second after being given 11/10 odds made it two surprises in a row for celikbilek. Celikbilek faced Giulio Zeppieri in the first round and, for a change, started as an 8/11 favorite, but to then win 6-3, 6-2 to advance to round two speaks volumes about him.
Brandon Nakashima and Altuğ Çelikbilek are scheduled to face each other in the second round of the 2022 ATP Firenze Open on Thursday, October 13. The tournament is scheduled to begin on October 10 and end on October 16.
