Lorenzo Musetti and Jan-Lennard Struff are scheduled to face each other in the quarterfinals of the 2022 ATP Sofia Open September 30.
Lorenzo Musetti, world no. 30, overcame a scare in the first round, rallying from a set down to beat Bulgaria’s Alexandar Lazarov in two hours and 42 minutes. The fourth seed, who received a bye in the first round, was outplayed in the first set tiebreak. Lazaroz served for the match at 6-5 in the second set, but Musetti broke back to tie the game and then took control. He won a tight second set tiebreak and then raced to victory in the final set to defeat the World No. 334, 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (10-8), 6-2. Following the second round victory, the 20-year-old Italian improved to 23-21. This year, he won his first ATP title in Hamburg.
Jan-Lennard Struff of Germany advanced to the quarterfinals with a straight sets victory over France’s Ugo Humbert. Struff, ranked 132nd, dominated the second round match from start to finish, taking only 62 minutes to defeat World No. 110, 6-3, 6-1. Struff faced no break points during the match and broke the lefty twice in both sets. Another intriguing statistic is that the German won 95% of his points (21 of 22) on his first serve. However, he only got 54% of his first serves correct. Struff had won the first round as a qualifier, coming from behind to defeat Dusan Lajovic. He had won both of his qualifiers in straight sets. He now has a four-match winning streak after winning in the second round.
