Although he was down 5-2 in the first set, Murray showed exceptional grit to save the set and go on to win his first round match against Cerundolo.
Andy Murray’s strong first round record remained intact on Monday when he beat Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo on Monday. The Scot won the match in straight sets, recording a score of 7-5, 6-3, 6-3. Although he was down 5-2 in the first set, Murray showed exceptional grit to save the set and go on to finish the match in a dominant fashion. “It was very tricky conditions today,” Murray said in his on-court interview. “Very humid and hot. I am very happy with the way I got through that one, it was not easy. He has had a brilliant year this year and I knew I had to play well and I did in the important moments.”
US tennis player Emilio Nava played out an absolute thriller in his opening match as he edged out a victory against Aussie John Millman. The score at the end of the match 7-6 (9-7), 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 1-6, 6-1 which saw Nava hit 15 aces and convert four out of 15 break points. Home advantage certainly did its part to help the American on and he will be hoping for the same against a former world no. 1 in the second round.
Andy Murray and Emilio Nava are scheduled to face each other on Wednesday, August 31 in the second round of the 2022 US Open. The fourth and final Grand Slam of the season began on August 29 and will go on until September 11.
