Andy Murray defeated Matteo Berrettini in a thrilling five-set match in Melbourne’s opening round by displaying class and using experience to his advantage. To his credit, he dominated the two sets he won and the super tiebreaker to record one of his best victories in recent memory, 6-3 6-3 4-6 6-7 7-6. He was fortunate that the Italian missed an easy shot on match point in the deciding set. The former world number one defeated top-20 players for the first time in a grand slam match since defeating Kei Nishikori in the quarterfinals of the 2017 French Open, snapping a five-match losing streak against them.
By dominating a hapless Fabio Fognini in the opening round of the Australian Open, Thanasi Kokkinakis earned his fifth victory of the 2023 campaign. The Australian would still be happy with his results after posting second-round and semifinal finishes in the first and second legs, respectively, even though he was unable to duplicate his performances from last year’s Adelaide tournaments earlier this month. The winner of the 2022 ATP Adelaide has never advanced past the second round of the Australian Open (0-3 in R2) in seven attempts, and the only other time he has done so at this calibre was at the French Open eight years ago.
