In the second round of the ATP Newport, Andy Murray lost a set to last week’s Wimbledon doubles champion Max Purcell, but he has only given up five games in the four sets he has won this week against Sam Querrey (6-2 6-0) and Max Purcell (4-6 6-2 6-1). In his lone prior quarterfinal match in Newport back in 2006, when he double-bageled Robert Kendrick at this level before falling to Justin Gimelstob in the semifinal, the two-time former Wimbledon champion did not drop a game. Additionally, it was his first time playing in a semifinal on grass at this level. Due to an injury sustained in the lead-up to his most significant tournament of the season, Wimbledon, the former world number one was unable to achieve the anticipated outcome. He lost in the first round of that tournament against John Isner. He did, however, perform admirably in the other two grass competitions he participated in this year, reaching the final in Stuttgart and the quarterfinal in Surbiton Challenger.

Alexander Bublik managed a three-set victory over Jack Sock in the second round (R1 bye) this week to maintain his perfect record (5-0) in first-round contests on grass this year. The Kazakh faced more breakpoint opportunities during the match, but he was able to save the majority of them and win, 6-3 3-6 6-2, on the serve of the former Wimbledon doubles champion. The top-ranked Kazakh has a chance to extend his run of at least one semifinal appearance on grass in each of the previous two seasons by winning this match. In his lone prior quarterfinal encounter on the surface this year at ATP Eastbourne, he fell short against the eventual champion Taylor Fritz and lost cheaply.
