The no. 4th seed Maxime Cressy will face Steve Johnson in the quarterfinal round of 2022 Hall of fame open on Thursday.
Maxime Cressy reached the quarterfinal of this event, matching his Newport performance from the previous year. The French-American player, who is seeded #4 in the main draw and received a bye in the first round, only needed to win one match to advance to this stage, as opposed to 2021. The big-serving American had to be relieved after defeating Mitchell Krueger because it put an end to his 2022 home losing run of four games. Early in the season, during the Australian swing, he displayed some incredible tennis play, but he soon went off the rails and fell short of expectations in four straight home tournaments in Dallas, Delray Beach, Indian Wells, and Miami. The world’s #41 player returned to winning ways and found his form on grass after a dismal stint on clay. He lost to Felix Auger Aliassime in Wimbledon, finished second to Taylor Fritz in Eastbourne, and Hubert Hurkacz, the eventual winner, in Halle.
This week’s quarterfinal in Newport required Steve Johnson to win just one match as well because Jiri Vesely gave him a walkover in the first round. Earlier in the campaign, he defeated fellow countryman Stefan Kozlov in straight sets to prevent a hat-trick of first-round tournament exits. The former world number 21 previously lost in the ATP Newport quarterfinals in 2014 and 2016, but won the tournament in 2018 after beating players like Marcel Granollers Pujol and Ramkumar Ramanathan. This will be the first time when Cressy and Johnson will face each other and it will be a thrilling match to watch.
Maxime Cressy and Steve Johnson will take on each other on Thursday, July 14 in the quarterfinal of the 2022 ATP Hall of Fame Open. The competition is scheduled to commence on July 11 and conclude on July 17 this year.
