Alex Molcan and Thiago Monteiro are scheduled to face one another in the first round match of the US Open 2022 on Tuesday, August 30.
Last year at Flushing Meadow, Alex Molcan participated in his first Grand Slam tournament and advanced to the third round, a feat he later duplicated at Wimbledon. He has participated in two clay court finals this year, losing both times—once in Morocco in April and once in Lyon in May. His form has not been the best on American hard courts thus far, but he did reach the semifinals on Hamburg’s clay after Wimbledon. In Montreal, he was defeated in the second round, and in Cincinnati, he was defeated in the first round by Argentine Diego Schwartzman.
The top-ranked Brazilian has a dismal record in New York and has never advanced past the first round of this competition since he first participated in it in 2016. Although it was on his preferred surface of clay, he will be encouraged by the fact that he won the Challenger tour last month in Austria. He lost in the first round of his next two matches in Kitzbuhel and Umag, and despite switching to hard courts, he was unable to advance to Cincinnati. Without this necessity in Winston Salem, he advanced to the quarterfinals before falling to French player Benjamin Bonzi in straight sets.
