Alex Molcan and Borna Coric will take on each other on Friday, July 22 in the quarterfinal round of the 2022 ATP Hamburg European open.
Molcan is back on clay after reaching the third round at Wimbledon earlier this season, his preferred surface by far. Molcan, who has reached two clay court competition finals this season, began his campaign in Hamburg with a tough win over local youngster Marko Topo, setting up a second round meeting with Pablo Carreno-Busta. And, despite being a 6/4 outsider to beat his Spanish opponent, Molcan accomplished exactly that, advancing to the quarterfinals of another clay court competition this season. Molcan triumphed 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (5) in two hours and 31 minutes, but more crucially, despite trailing 3-1 in the last set.
After missing much of the previous season due to injury concerns, Borna Coric’s decline in the rankings has been well-documented. Although it has taken him some time to return, it appears that the former world number 12 is beginning to find his footing. Coric, who had triumphed in the Parma Challenger on clay last month, has now won back-to-back matches in an ATP top-level competition for the first time this year. Coric defeated Tallon Griekspoor 6-3, 6-4 in the second round after rallying from a set down to defeat Laslo Djere in the opening round.
