On Wednesday, the second round of the 2022 ATP Croatia Open will pit world number 38 Alex Molcan against 86th-ranked Roberto Carballes Baena.

With a current ranking of 38th in the world, Alex Molcan is having the best season of his career, and that was evident in his matchup with Duje Ajdukovic. The Slovak easily defeated Ajdukovic in straight sets to set up this matchup with Carballes Baena in the second round. Molcan, a semifinalist the previous week in Hamburg, completely destroyed the novice Ajdukovic as he breezed through the opening set with little to no hesitation. Only in the second set did his opponent able to mount a serious challenge, breaking Molcan and then rallying from 2-4 down. However, as the set entered a tiebreaker, the world number 38 showed no signs of slowing down.
Henri Laaksonen’s opponent, Carballes Baena, was the favourite, and the world number 86 performed admirably. In his first main draw match at this level since winning the opening match of the French Open, the Spaniard defeated his 110th-ranked opponent in straight sets. Carballes Baena won 6-4, 7-5 in a contest that lasted more than two hours despite Laaksonen trying to wear down his opponent’s second serve. Baena had started off as 9/20 in his opening encounter. In both sets, Carballes Baena broke his opponent in the first game, but after losing his own serve to give Laaksonen the chance to tie the match, he broke him once more to win it.
Alex Molcan and Carballes Baena will take on each other on Wednesday July 27 in the second round of the 2022 Croatia open. The competition is scheduled to commence on July 25 and conclude on July 31 this year.
