Kristina Mladenovic, 29, of France, has been out of form for the majority of this season. Her singles record is 11-22, and she is ranked 122nd in the world. She is ranked outside of the top 20 in doubles. Mladenovic has competed in WTA, ITF, and Challenger events, but has not had much success. The exception is ITF Caserta, where she won the title in June. She has mostly lost in the early stages since then. Her most recent WTA event was the US Open, where she was defeated in three sets by Sara Bejlek in the first qualifying round. Kristina then competed in an ITF event in France, where she was defeated in round two by Mona Barthel.

Given Mladenovic’s recent struggles, Sohyun Park will be optimistic about her chances at her home tournament in Seoul. The 20-year-old is currently ranked 488 in the world, and she has reached seven finals in her career (three titles, four runner-ups). Park, like her experienced French counterpart, has had a disappointing few months on the road recently. Sohyun recently competed in a couple of ITF events in France, but fell in the first round to the likes of Magali Kempen and Daria Snigur. Of course, there are some exceptions. Park reached the semifinals of the ITF Tbilisi 2 and 3 tournaments, as well as the ITF Glasgow tournament.
