Eugenie Bouchard and Tatjana Maria will face each other in the first round of the 2022 WTA Korea Open on September 20.
Bouchard appears to be slowly making a comeback after missing the majority of tennis action in 2021 and then again this season. And judging by how things appear, she did a good job of it last week when she advanced to the Chennai Open quarterfinal. With victories in straight sets over Joanne Zuger and Kamran Thandi, Bouchard demonstrated that she was a much better player than her ranking of 800th or so at the time. possibly even higher than her current ranking of 520. There was no denying Bouchard’s tennis prowess, even in her quarterfinal loss to Nadia Podoroska; she had won the opening set 6-1 before her Argentinian opponent took control of the match.
After giving birth to her second child, Tatjana Maria took a break from tennis until around July of last year. However, three months later, she was back playing competitive tennis. Before reaching the second round of a WTA 125 tournament in Limoges, Maria, who played the majority of her matches on the ITF circuit, had only won six of her 20 matches. This year’s start of the new season was noticeably better. The German qualified for the Bogota Open and won an ITF championship on the indoor hardcourts of Rome. Her best performance, though, came at Wimbledon, where she advanced to the semifinal before losing to Ons Jabeur in a hard-fought match.
