Elise Mertens, the fifth seed, will take on Liudmila Samsonova of Russia in the 2022 WTA Washington Open's opening round on Monday.
Elise Mertens is the current World No. 1 in doubles and the No. 30 in singles. She is skilled and has won many Grand Slams, which should at least on paper help her advance far in the Citi Open 2022. Her doubles accomplishments include victories in the Dubai Championships as well as finals at Doha, Miami, Den Bosch, Birmingham, and Wimbledon. For the 26-year-old Belgian, things have been a little slow in the singles division as she arrived in Washington with a record of 17-14. Her results on hard courts, which include participation in the fourth round of the Australian Open, the quarterfinal of St. Petersburg, and the third round of Doha and Indian Wells, are encouraging. Mertens hasn’t had any late-round finishes on the singles tour so far this year, but he’ll want to change that in the US.
Liudmila Samsonova, a 23-year-old Russian, has had a busy year. She debuted in the top 25 in May by taking the 25th position. She was previously ranked #57, but has since slipped to #57 due to a dry spell. In Stuttgart, Liudmila’s most notable performance was her run to the semifinals. She has since participated in six events, but has only achieved one victory. Samsonova had a little better performance at the beginning of the season when she reached the R16 in Indian Wells and the quarterfinals in Adelaide. She has also defeated players like Victoria Azarenka, Karolina Pliskova, Paula Badosa, and Belinda Bencic throughout her career. Theoretically, Mertens shouldn’t present such a significant challenge.
Elise Mertens and Liudmila Samsonova will face each other in the first round of the 2022 Citi open on Monday, August 1. The WTA 500 competition is scheduled to start from August 1 and end on August 7 this year.
