In the opening round of the 2022 WTA Washington Open on Monday, world number 84 Harriet Dart of Great Britain will face world number 100 Lin Zhu of China.

For the first time this year, Harriet Dart has cracked the top 100 in the world, and her ascent up the rankings was aided by her performance in Indian Wells, when she defeated top-ten-ranked player Elina Svitolina. She subsequently had a strong grass court season, making it to her second and first WTA quarterfinals in Eastbourne and Nottingham, respectively. She would have been disappointed to lose in the second round of Wimbledon. She lost to the American Jessica Pegula there, and this will be her first match since, although she hopes to improve throughout the American hard court season.
Lin Zhu, one of many Chinese athletes now competing on the WTA circuit, made it to her second senior final in the doubles event in Mexico in February, but she and her partner, Xinyu Wang, were forced to settle for second place. Three years prior, they had won the Jiangxi Open championship. Her finest singles performance came when she defeated Frenchwoman Kristina Mladenovic in the final to win the 125k competition in Korea last December. The only time she advanced past the first round at that level was in Prague a few days ago, despite splitting 2022 between the ITF and the main circuit. She was defeated by the number seven seed Anastasia Potapova in the second round, but at least she gave her opponent a tough fight in the second set tie-break.
Harriet Dart and Lin Zhu will face each other in the first round of the 2022 Citi open on Monday, August 1. The WTA 500 competition is scheduled to start from August 1 and end on August 7 this year.

The 2022 Citi Open will see six rounds of action excluding the qualifiers. These include the round of 64, round of 32, round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final. The tournament is scheduled to commence on August 1 and conclude on August 8 this year.
