Medvedev would have been eager to return to the court to add to his winning record after losing his opening match in Montreal and receiving a bye in the first round here. And in the end, the Los Cabos Open champion achieved just that. In a match that lasted one hour and 35 minutes, Daniil Medvedev defeated Botic van de Zandschulp 6-4, 7-5 to advance to the third round of a competition he had won in 2019. In the first game of the match, Medvedev broke his opponent, and for a while, that was the only service break in the match. He only needed that to win the first set. When Medvedev broke van de Zandschulp in the eleventh game of the second set, there was no turning back. In the first set, the two exchanged early serve breaks, and Medvedev even faced a set point against him.

For a shaken-up Denis Shapovalov, the tournament has gotten off to a good start. Shapovalov started as the second favourite in each of his first two matches and won both because of his recent struggles with his form. Shapovalov defeated Tommy Paul in three sets after falling behind in the first set against Grigor Dimitrov, who had been eliminated in the opening round. Shapovalov triumphed 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 to win three consecutive matches for the first time in his career. Earlier this year, he had reached the quarterfinals of the Rome Masters. Daniil Medvedev and Denis Shapovalov are scheduled to face one another in the third round of the 2022 Cincinnati Open on Thursday, August 18. The tournament is scheduled to run from August 14 till August 21.
