Medvedev, who is yet to drop a set so far in the competition, made short work of Wu Yibing in the third round.
The round of 16 of the 2022 US Open will see a blockbuster fixture as defending champion Daniil Medvedev gets set to face an in-form Nick Kyrgios at the Flushing Meadows. Medvedev, who is yet to drop a set so far in the competition, made short work of Wu Yibing in the third round. The Russian won the match 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 after recording 12 aces and converting six out of 12 break points. “We’ve played great matches. I think all have been quite tight on the scoreboard,” Medvedev said about Kyrgios. “It’s 3-1 to him but I will try to do better this time and it will be a great match for people to watch. Tonight I feel like I played at a quite high level and I was serving a little better than him, which was the key. There were a lot of tight games and I felt the level of the match was high.”
Kyrgios has been on a roll throughout the 2022 season, reaching the final of the Wimbledon Championships earlier. The Aussie had a field day against home favourite JJ Wolf, winning by a score of 6-4, 6-2, 6-3. He hit 21 aces and converted five out of 11 break points. “It was a very tough match for me,” Kyrgios said. “I knew J.J. is a home crowd favourite, I knew I had to be on my guns today and serve well. I’m just really happy to move forward,” the Aussie said. Kyrgios also mentioned that he was excited to play someone like Medvedev on such a stage.
Daniil Medvedev and Nick Kyrgios are scheduled to face each other on Sunday, September 4 in the round of 16 of the 2022 US Open. The fourth and final Grand Slam of the season began on August 29 and will go on until September 11.
