Daniil Medvedev is the current world No. 1, but he asserts on the eve of the Los Cabos tournament that he is not in the driver’s seat in the race to conclude the year there. Medvedev is under intense scrutiny from Zverev and Rafael Nadal, who has won two Grand Slams this season. And, with Russia defending 1000 points in Canada next week, there will be little room for error from here on out. Despite reaching the Australian Open final in January, Medvedev has not had a particularly productive year by his own lofty standards. The loss to Nadal after squandering a two-sets-to-love lead in Melbourne left a bitter taste in his mouth and has plainly affected his confidence.
Rinky Hijikata did not expect to win his first ATP match this week, but the 21-year-old Australian was assigned possibly the easiest tie of the round against Rodrigo Pacheco Mendez, who is 17 years old. Hijikata outplayed the Mexican wild card, and after romping to a 6-3 4-0 lead, his opponent retired due to injury, giving Hijikata a free pass into Wednesday’s match against top seed Medvedev. The Sydney native has worked relentlessly over the past six months to reach this point, and she entered the Los Cabos event with a career-high ranking. If he pulls off an unexpected victory over the world No. 1, he may be trying to get into the top 200 for the first time.
