Petra Martic, the eighth seed, and Kateryna Baindl will compete against one another in the 2022 WTA Poland Open quarterfinal on Friday.
At WTA Gdynia in July, Kateryna Baindl, the current World No. 190, achieved her best WTA results reaching semifinals, since the previous year. Since then, the 28-year-old Ukrainian has largely been forced to accept early-round exits from ITF and WTA competitions. She did have some success in the former by making the final in Montpellier this month. Here in Warsaw, she started off as a qualifier, first defeating Yulia Hatouka. But in the last qualifying match, she was defeated by Jesika Maleckova. She advanced to the main draw thanks to the fortunate loser rule, and she took full use of the opportunity. Kateryna upped the ante by defeating Sara Errani and Maryna Zanevska in straight sets (6-2, 3-0). Her record now stands at 16-14 thanks to her accomplishments.
Petra Martic, a 31-year-old athlete from Lausanne who recently won the title, came in Warsaw. She defeated players including Olga Danilovic, Caroline Garcia, and Belinda Bencic to win her first championship at that venue since September 2019. Prior to that, Croatian recorded her greatest Grand Slam performance of the season by making it to the fourth round of Wimbledon. Petra has had a difficult year; her impressive showings at the Italian Open and Indian Wells Open were ruined by a string of first-round exits at other competitions. She currently has a record of 25-13, which includes her two victories in the Poland Open. She has defeated emerging young Polish players thus far in her campaign, most notably Weronika Falkowska (7-5, 6-4) and Maja Chwalinska (6-3, 3-6, 6-3).
Petra Martic and Kateryna Baindl will face each other in the quarterfinal round of the 2022 WTA Poland Open on Friday, July 29. The WTA 250 competition is scheduled to start from July 25 and end on July 31 this year.
