On Friday, a quarterfinal matchup at the 2022 WTA Poland Open will take place between Jasmine Paolini and Viktorija Golubic.
The season has been very eventful for Viktorija Golubic, a 29-year-old Swiss athlete. She had her highest singles ranking of #35 in February; as of right present, she is placed No. 103. Her score had fallen to 14-17 as well, but the two victories in Warsaw should improve her situation and give her more confidence. Both came in three sets, the first with doubles specialist Kristina Mladenovic and the second with Arianne Hartono. In the second round of Wimbledon, Golubic was defeated by Barbora Krejcikova. She dropped out of the top 100 after failing to hold onto her points from the quarterfinal of the previous year. Her grass season was full of ups and downs; after winning in the semifinals in Nottingham, she lost in the first round in both Birmingham and Eastbourne.
Jasmine Paolini, the number 10 seed, has performed well so far in the Poland Open. Given that she excels at working with clay, it is not altogether unexpected (12 ITF finals, 2 Challenger finals). The Italian player defeated Danka Kovinic in the opening match 6-1, 6-1, and then lost to Clara Burel in three sets, ultimately triumphing 6-1, 6-7(1), 6-0. With these victories, Paolini is presently at 15-16, or almost equal to Golubic. Jasmine has had a difficult year, much like the Swiss, but she did make it all the way to the semifinals in Palermo last week. The 26-year-old will try to maintain the current speed now that he has gained some momentum.
Jasmine Paolini and Vicktorija Golubic will face each other in the quarterfinal round of the 2022 WTA Poland Open on Friday, July 29. The WTA 250 competition is scheduled to start from July 25 and end on July 31 this year.
