Even though his loss to Brandon Nakashima in the San Diego final last year was the closest he has been to winning a senior title, Giron has established a reputation as one of the tour’s most reliable players. However, he had to work much harder than he would have anticipated to defeat American qualifier and world number 378 Alex Rybakov. While both players had other break points, they were unable to convert them, Giron was able to win the first set with the lone break. Until Giron broke again, giving him the chance to serve for the match, service continued to rule the second set. Rybakov broke back in response to the challenge and then dominated the tie-break that followed. Fortunately for Giron, he was able to collect himself and use his knowledge to calm down. He defeated Rybakov twice before winning the third set with just one game remaining.

Otte entered Dallas in search of his first victory since the first day of the new year and just his second victory of the year. He had dropped every match after winning the first one he had played for Germany in the United Cup, including a four-set loss in the opening round of the Australian Open to a Chinese qualifier. Thus, even though his victory over American Christopher Eubanks, the 104th-ranked player in the world, was not entirely convincing, he would have been happy to put an end to that losing streak. However, the German got off to a strong start, breaking Eubanks in the first game of the match and building on his lead to win the opening set. Early in the second set, Eubnaks responded with a break of his own, but when he was serving for the set, he too was broken. Otte dropped his own serve once more, levelling the match before he had a chance to rejoice. Eubanks’ performance declined in the third set, which Otte took advantage of to break him twice and win the match. Otte had to struggle for the victory, but in the end it was comfortable.
