On Monday, Pedro Cachin competed in his first-round match in Buenos Aires and triumphed against Thiago Monteiro 7-6 6-4 to earn his first victory of the 2023 campaign. Cachin had dropped his previous five games without picking up a single set victory. But, it was the second time this season that he faced up against a lower-ranked opponent, and in an efficient hour and 55 minutes on a clay court, his quality shone through. In the opening set, which ended in a tiebreak, the two players traded service breaks. With only two points lost, the Argentinean dominated it with his ground stroke accuracy. For the duration of the game, that increased confidence in his abilities. In the ninth game of the second set, he defeated Monteiro to love and coolly served to advance to the next round.
For the first time since his shocking five-set loss to Lloyd Harris in the Australian Open first round, Lorenzo Musetti will rejoin play on the red clay in Buenos Aires. Musetti had a fantastic start to the year by helping Italy go to the United Cup final. However, he was forced to leave the match with a 2-6 deficit after suffering a right shoulder injury in the last match against American Frances Tiafoe. Italy lost the match and the championship because it never recovered. But because the year’s first Grand Slam was just around the horizon, Musetti’s injury was a preventative measure. Also, he had no physical problems during his first-round encounter in Melbourne. Harris, a powerful server from South Africa, broke Musetti’s serve six times and blasted past him with 17 aces. Harris won the match in a fifth-set tiebreak as a result of the young Italian’s inability to consistently apply pressure to Harris’ serve.
